Do I Really Need The Perfect Golf Swing?

Book Review - The Negotiable Golf Swing

Is it really necessary to build a perfect golf swing? Joseph Laurentino, the head golf professional at the Indian Hills Country Club on Long Island doesn’t think so. In his new book, The Negotiable Golf Swing: How to Improve Your Game Without Picture-Perfect Form, Laurentino explores many elements of the golf swing that he views as negotiable – elements that can be tweaked rather than tearing down and emulating the perfect golf swing.

At over 200 pages and 12 chapters in all, Laurentino explores the many elements of the golf swing, the learning model, and both non-negotiable items which result in ball flight as well as those items which are negotiable, where one can make minor adjustments and still maintains one’s unique swing while still improving consistency.

Said another way:

How club works at impact + your swing elements = successful swing

Joseph brings his vast teaching expertise on the learning model and completes his work by exploring the question of whether one should take golf lessons by a professional.

I believe this book will go down as being one of the really great golf instruction books and I highly recommend its purchase by players of all levels.

Why?

Well firstly, the book is easy to read and understand by both beginners and experts alike. After reading Hogan’s 5 Fundamentals, I was very confused. Laurentino’s explanation of factor’s that affect ball flight (Chapter 4) accomplished the basic task in an easy to understand way. That alone is worth the price of the book, in my opinion. So the first five chapters really help to build a foundation of understanding of the golf swing.

Second, Laurentino reviews each of the negotiable elements and provides insight into understanding what is happening with your swing as well as training tips to help diagnose and improve your swing. Entire chapters are devoted to the elements of direction, pre-swing, speed, time and space. As well, chapters are also devoted to playing short shots and putting. Finally, Laurentino wraps up the book with chapters on practice and thoughts on taking a lesson.

Golf is an interesting game as it is hard to know who will step up to the tee box on any given day. Breaking down your golf swing each season and trying to build the perfect swing (lesson after lesson) seems to be an admirable goal, however it can be extremely frustrating in practice, when trying to take new learning’s off the range and onto the course. Why not learn to better understand more about your swing and discover ways to add consistency and detect fixes to your swing while still enjoying your game?

That’s my approach – Why not read Laurentino’s book and see what you can learn about your golf swing – at much less time and money spent than via professional golf instruction.

Golf Swing Tip - Getting Your Hands Through The Ball During Impact

Golf Swing Tip - Getting Your Hands Through The Ball During Impact

You can make a lot of progress in improving your golf swing by following various golf tips and golf swing adjustments. At Golf-Pedia, we search out and provide a number of the right golf tips that will help you to improve your golf swing, no matter what level you are playing. Many of these tips will require you to really break down your swing and pay attention to your stance, your swing style, your grip, and your body rotation.

While there are many swing tips out there, many professional instructors seldom focus on the position and movement of your hands and forearms when impact occurs. Usually, if at all this type of training only occurs after many golf lessons have occurred.

It’s a good idea to stop and review what is happening with your hands while swinging. Check out the tip below and give it a try-I think you’ll be amazed, as it is part of the fundamentals of a good golf swing.

Implementing The Tip

Get into your normal swing stance, just the same as you would be when making real contact with the ball. Now take your trailing wrist and “flip it”, just like casting a fishing rod. This flipping-wrist action is a fairly common problem among golfers, also known as a “wrist break”, and is totally undesired. Pay attention to this tip as you really want to endeavor to end this wrist break habit. Do so and you will see your golf swing improve immensely.

What you are really trying to achieve when you flip your hands through the ball when contact is made, is the following:

Pay attention to what your hands and wrists are doing, and to correct the habit, is to simply employ a wristwatch. To do this, strap one on so you can visualize the correct way to move your hands. When you make your golf swing, as you approach impact with the ball, the leading arm should see the face of your watch pointing straight down towards the target line.

Now what you should be doing is rotating the face of the watch so that it is pointing straight at the ground. Take a club in your hands and watch this move make the trailing forearm and wrist flip over to the top of your leading forearm and wrist.

Tip on Top of a Tip!

This is great-You can add distance to your shot in addition to reducing your slice because the club face will “close” smoothly. Now each time you practice your swing you should be thinking about this this movement during impact. Don’t forget that your forearms are working in sync. They should be as close to one another as possible.

Try this golf swing tip out at your next practice session. I think you’ll be amazed at the improvement you will make in your golf swing

Golf Instruction - Improve Your Game

Golf Instruction - Improve Your Game

It’s all about practice, right? If you are satisfied with your golf scores, then I guess it doesn’t matter. But if you are like most people, if you want to improve your scores, you need to look into golf instruction. Everyone needs to do, and if the pros do it, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and it can be hard to be honest about what you need to work on, but you know you have areas to work on improving. The good news is, a good golf instructor is trained to see the areas in your game that need to be improved, and can help round out your game, helping to make you a more consistent player. This article presents some advice to help you get the most out of your money when seeking golf instruction.

Private Golf Lessons
While private lessons can be expensive, it is amazing at how much benefit one can get out of a single lesson. Group lessons are less expensive, but how much real time do you really get with the instructor. And how deep into your swing can golf classes get? Getting some quality one on one time with a talented golf instructor can really help to lower your scores. Also, getting a golf instructor earlier in your golf career can help to avoid the development of bad habits, which can take a lot of time and effort to eliminate. The sooner you make certain progressions, the sooner you will be better equipped to improve your game your game in the future.

Use Videos and Manuals
Videos and manuals, while not containing as much personal feedback as private lessons, can still provide a great deal of information that can help you improve your game. there are many great manuals and golf instruction videos on the market that can really help you to make noticeable improvements. Seek out videos or ebooks that are noted or recommended by good golfers. Read reviews and recommendations on these products to see what the people got from using them. If you pick the right instruction then you can learn a lot, and it will often cost you much less than private tuition. Even freely available golf instruction videos are available on the internet, and you would be amazed at the level of quality that is offered for free by golf pros to market their services. There are many tips and tricks that you can learn freely. Don’t neglect practice though as it it will still take plenty of determination and regular practice to get better.

Learn to Coach Yourself
Although most players will need some coaching to help them along at some point, for day to day problems you can learn to coach yourself. Use the golf instruction you pay for to learn how to see problems in your game and improve them yourself. Watch good players at work and try to see why they are doing well. Use these techniques in your own game and you can help to iron out the problems in your game independently. There will be times when golf instruction is necessary, but you can save yourself money by learning how to identify minor problems yourself and keep your play consistent.

Try Video Swing Analysis

One of the golf improvement items available at many golf centers is a video swing analysis trainer. Just hit several shots off this equiment and you get all kinds of data on your swing-the swing speed the launch angle, the face alignment, etc. This can really help you to make adjustments to your grip or other parts of your swing and evaluate the improvement. Most systems come with a video system that will allow you to replay your swing, compare it with others and also perform some graphical anlysis of your swing.

Try these golf instruction tips and watch your game improve!

Brush Up on Some Basic Golf Rules

Brush Up on Some Basic Golf Rules

Basic golf rules are simple and easy to learn, but if you are brand new to the game of golf, basic golf rules may be mystifying to you. There are many unspoken rules that go along with the game that you need to familiarize yourself with in order to become comfortable out on the course and with other players. Basic golf rules range from the mechanics of the game, course conduct, etiquette, and course maintenance. Learning a few of the most commonly encountered basic golf rules will prepare you for a great time out on the course, whether it is your first time to set foot on a golf course or you are just brushing up on the fundamental rules of the game.

• A round of golf consists of eighteen holes, which you should allow a minimum of four hours to complete.
• The maximum number of clubs allowed in your golf bag while you are playing a round is fourteen. Having more clubs in your bag than this can result in stroke penalties.
• Basic golf rules that have to do with etiquette include letting the proper person hit first at the beginning of each hole and during the course of the hole. The person with honors on the tee box, or the first hitter, is who scored the lowest on the previous hole. While on the putting green or hitting approach shots, the player who hits first is who is farthest from the hole.
• It is important to make sure the hole or green is clear before you hit your shot. Also, be sure no one is standing near you before you take your swing.

One of the basic golf rules that many beginner golfers most often violate is the rule to avoid slow play. Follow these simple pointers to help yourself get around the golf course at an appropriate speed.

• Check to make sure you have all the equipment you need before you start your round. You will need enough tees and golf balls to last you the entire round.
• Practice or training does not belong on the golf course. Participate in any golf practice or training on the driving range or practice green.
• If you are searching for a lost ball, limit your search to a maximum of five minutes.
• Try to keep the pace of the group immediately in front of you. If a group of golfers is behind you and playing at a faster pace, it is polite to let them play through and proceed ahead of your group.
• Clear the putting green as soon as your group has finished putting. The green is not the right place to calculate scores.

Essential Golf Swing Teaching Aids

Essential Golf Swing Teaching Aids To Get You To Swing Better

After watching the movie Tin Cup, I found myself amazed at the number and variety of golf swing teaching aids to help you improve your golf swing. You can be sure that there are plenty of them that you can pick and choose from. However, before spending your hard-earned money on any of them, you should first consider the particular aspect of your golf swing that you want to focus your improvements. When you understand what your strengths are with regard to your golf swing and what your weaknesses are, you will have a much better idea which of the golf swing teaching aids to choose that will help accentuate the strengths and help you develop the perfect golf swing.

Do Some Swing Aid Research

The first thing you can do is to try searching on the Internet. Among the many options out there and some of the most popular:

  1. Speed radars
  2. Impact labels
  3. The Self Teaching Board

However, there is one golf swing teaching aid that you don’t have to buy and that is a mirror of full size in front of which you can spend some time practicing your stance as well as your swing. These can really help as they are seen at many of the indoor golf practice centers throughout the country.

Another golf swing teaching aid you could make use of is a video camera with which you can record yourself as you practice and then watch the video playback and do some analyzing about what is right and what is wrong with your golf swing. This is a technique that is often utilized with professional golfers who acknowledge that by seeing their own mistakes they are able to correct them and also change the mistakes forever. You will see things about your swing that you can’t get by listening to someone critique your swing. Many of these video systems allow you to match up your swing with that of a pro, so you can really break down your swing into components that you can then focus on with swing aids and much practice.

If you choose the speed radars, which allow you to measure how fast your ball is traveling, you will be able to adjust the speed of your golf swing by using this very effective golf swing teaching aid. This is especially important because you want to develop consistency in your swing speed and by doing so will notice a marked improvement in your game. It also allows you to set yourself goals to aim for.

You can also use impact labels, which are labels that you stick to the club and when you strike the ball an impact mark will be left on the label. This will help you determine whether your are hitting the ball on the proper area of the club face. This golf swing teaching aid is made for different club types, and impact labels are inexpensive and are very useful as well. You can easy procure fifty of them in a pack and they are quite similar to “Caddy Patches”.

Another useful golf swing teaching aid is The Self Teaching Board Golf Training Aid. This is nothing but a board that you can place where you are practicing and it is especially well suited for the beginning golfer. The Board itself has one side that shows how to address the ball properly while the other side shows where the ball should be placed and also where to position your feet at the time of swinging. Using this aid should help in developing the proper habits, which includes a consistent method of addressing the ball each and every time.

Try including some of these teaching aids in your regular practice sessions and you’ll be impressed at the progress that you make in improving your golf swing.

How to Play Golf

How to Play Golf - Follow the Written and Unwritten Rules

Golfing is the sport of gentlemen. No other sport draws quite so many players from the upper-class regions of society as the sport of golf does. Part of the reason golf appeals to so many upper-class people is the etiquette surrounding the game. If you think about the last time you saw a golf player win big, how did he or she respond? A simple wave of the hand to the fans is usually all you will see. This is just one of the many pieces of etiquette surrounding the game.

Golf is perhaps the most famous sport associated directly with a brand of etiquette all its own. Drawing a lot of its players from the so-called upper classes, golf has developed a great appeal with the players within it because of a sort of unspoken code between the players that etiquette is one of the “rules” of the game.

Why does golf have so many etiquette rules? Most of the rules of etiquette surrounding the game of golf lend to the prestige of the game. The rules keep players and courses safe, and keep the pace of the game steady. Most golfers learn the rules of etiquette as they play the game, but beginners will do well to understand a few of the unwritten rules of golf before beginning the sport.

Most of the obvious etiquette rules, such as waiting until the previous player is done and out of the way before swinging your club, have to do with keeping everyone on the course safe. These may appear to be obvious rules but you would be surprised how often this rule is not followed.

There many rules in golf that are quite obvious that employ general politeness. You do not want to charge ahead of a player while they are lining up a putt. It is certainly far from ideal to run your golf cart through one’s area of play. Of course, a lot of the time, following the rules of golf also depend on who you are playing with and you need to gauge or otherwise understand where your partners stand on these issues.

In many cases, rules are designed to keep the play on the course moving. Slower parties are asked to step aside and let faster groups play through. If you lose your ball you are only given five minutes to search for it. After that time, you take a penalty and get a new ball. One of the worst things a golfing party can do is allow a build up of waiting groups behind them. If you find that your group is moving slower than everyone else, consider ways to save time, such as taking more than one club with you to the putting green, to save a trip back to the golf cart should you need a different club. Or you can play ready golf where the person who is ready hits first rather than going in a specific order of play.

Golfing is a sport that requires intense concentration. For this reason the atmosphere is almost always quiet on the golf course. If another player is making a put or taking a swing, it is one of the biggest taboos of the game to talk or make noise of any kind. This is the reason that even pro golfers do not react in a jubilant manner after a particularly good swing. When playing golf, the golfer never knows what the other participants within earshot might be doing, and messing up someone’s shot because of excited behavior is frowned upon. Also, players need to watch their shadows when playing on a sunny day. It is very rude to allow your shadow to cross someone else’s line of play.

So if you are new to the game of golf, you need to pay attention to these simple rules of etiquette. Those you are playing with will appreciate it, and they might even mistake you for a seasoned pro!

How To Hit a Golf Ball

How To Hit a Golf Ball

When you first start playing golf, it can seem extremely difficult to hit the golf ball properly. Learning how to swing a golf club is not an easy process, because the golf swing is an unnatural motion that you can only perfect through practice. Also, you are probably going to be nervous when you first learn how to swing a golf club. After all, you don’t want to look bad in front of the other golfers, and this will affect your swing.

However, if you know a few simple rules about how to swing a golf club then you will avoid many of the major mistakes that people make when they first play golf. Here is some basic information about the golf swing and some practice techniques to help you improve your ability to hit a golf ball.

Backswing

The backswing should be equally focused on the body rotation and club and arm extension. The backswing should consist of a fluid and one-piece motion with a straight front elbow, although this can be tough to do. The back elbow should be bent at around 90 degrees if possible. If you can do all these things then your backswing will be smooth and consistent.

Downswing

You might think the downswing begins with your arms, but it should actually start with your legs. You should move your knees, then thighs and hips forward to transfer your weight from back to front. Doing this will increase the distance you hit the ball. Again, this movement should be smooth and fast, just like a snake when it uncoils.

Impact and Follow-Through

Now we come to the important part – the impact with the ball. You club shaft should form a straight line with the left (forward) arm. Your weight should be on your forward heel to the outside and on the inside of the back foot. Your hands and wrist should turn so that the grip of the club points at the target where you want to hit the ball. Then the wrists should rotate over and elbows bend, with the head of the club behind you. This will give you the distance and control you desire in your golf swing.

Continue to Practice and Review Your Progress

Whilst it seems like a complex motion, as long as you continue to practice you will start to get used to the motion. Practice your swing whenever you can, even if it just going through the motions at home. This will train your muscles to be used to the movement, making it seem more natural. This will improve your consistency, and speed up the process of learning how to swing a golf club.

Also consider getting some golf swing teaching aids. At the very least, see if you can use a video camera unit to get real feedback on your progress.

Getting The Perfect Golf Swing

Getting The Perfect Golf Swing

Author: Michael Bradley

It is every golfers desire to have the perfect golf swing, which if they are lucky and fortunate enough to develop, will help lower their handicap as well as add several yards to their tee shots. Many books, teaching professionals and golf videos indicate that one can achieve this perfect form by simply performing a few simple golf exercises. It is claimed that by doing some very easy though specific golf exercises, a golfer can have greater flexibility and also considerably more power and of course master the perfect golf swing.

Practice and Muscle Memory is Key

There is a lot more to playing golf than simply walking up and down the fairways and striking the golf ball, you really need to be reasonably physically fit. To get there, you should perform golf fitness exercises that are especially meant for golfers and which will give you more flexibility and strength, and also make you more balanced and able to handle greater strains as well.

To develop the perfect golf swing, you must be flexible in your range of motion so that you can strike the ball squarely and thereby send it longer. You will need to learn a few fundamentals to the golf swing as well. For example, you should extend your shoulder while you are making your backswing that in turn will help to determining how much power should be transmitted into the ball. If you do this as an exercise set of fifteen reps, then you will begin to develop the perfect golf swing over a short span of time.

There are other exercises that you will need to consider which will help you develop a perfect golf swing and these include the golf twist, and the golf squat. In the case of the golf twist, you would need to stand like you are addressing the golf ball and then hold a five pound medicine ball in both hands, or even a dumbbell near to the center of your chest and keep your elbows out extended to the side. Next, you should keep your head still and be flat on your feet and then bring up the ball and over to the right just like you do when making a backswing (if your are right-handed) and continue till your left shoulder is beneath the chin. This simple exercise can be repeated for the left side as well, and it should help you achieve the perfect golf swing.

When you practice the golf squat, you need to stand with a ten pound dumbbell down before you using a hand over hand grip and you need to keep your feet about shoulder width apart and then you should lower to the squatting position and then rise your body turning towards the right and at the same time bend the elbows and raise the weight up and above the right shoulder while your hips must be facing to the right, and your weight should be above your right foot while the left heel is raised from the floor. Repeating this exercise about twelve times should help you get a perfect golf swing.

Utilizing the golf twist and the golf squat exercises, you have two perfect golf swing drills that will see you achieve peak physical fitness that is so important for every golfer to have a perfect golf swing. Also don’t forget to practice the flexibility exercise mentioned earlier in the article
